for Applied Ethics
http://www.ethics.ubc.ca/
The Centre was formally created in 1993 by the University
of British Columbia's Board of Governors as an independent
unit in the Faculty of Graduate Studies. It is primarily
an interdisciplinary research centre which studies a diverse
range of topics, including health care practices, business
and professional procedures, new information technologies
and environmental issues. The Centre works closely with
most disciplines and interdisciplinary units on campus:
for example, the Division of Biomedical Ethics, Health
Care Faculties and Teaching Hospitals, the Faculty of Commerce
and Business Administration, the Westwater Research Centre,
and the Sustainable Development Research Institute.

PHIL 330 Professional & Business Ethics
In many respects, the ethical challenges posed by today's workplace are no
different from those encountered in yesterday's. Is it alright to use deception
to increase sales of products and services? How should you balance loyalty
to your boss with loyalty to your family? Should corporate "secrets" be
revealed when the interests of the public are at risk? But there are new
concerns. How should we understand corporate social responsibility in the
globalized New World Order? Should environmentally sustainable business practice
be considered a cost or a benefit? Why is there such resistance to affirmative
action and equity hiring initiatives? Has the ubiquity of professionalization
trivialized it beyond recognition? Philosophy 330 will explore these and
other issues in a highly structured context of theoretical study, rigorous
critical analysis and lively debate.
Eligibility:
Enrolment at the university required, no need to pursue a full time degree
