WORKSHOPS IN ORGANIZATIONAL VALUES AND ETHICS AND CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

In the past few years there have been many dynamic changes in the public and private sectors caused by globalization, demographic changes in the workplace, recruitment and retention issues, consumer and social scrutiny of organizational responsibilities, rapid innovations in products and services, and technological advancement. Overall these changes have created flatter and leaner organizational structures to respond quickly to environmental changes. As a consequence there is more teamwork, delegation, and empowerment of employees, and less rules and procedures to guide our actions. The workshops in organizational values and ethics will be of interest to anyone who must manage in a less rule oriented environment. The focus in these workshops is on the role of values and ethics in developing a climate of trust, in building and harnessing interdependency, and in creating an organization which recognizes and responds to ethical issues in a timely manner.

THE ETHICS NETWORK

The Ethics Network, as part of its mandate, seeks to provide a bridge between those working in specialized areas of ethics or political philosophy and those who are working in public policy. Four of the central aims of The Ethics Network are: to explore connections between public policy decisions and ethics; to disseminate the results in a fashion that achieves a balance between standards appropriate to the relevant academic disciplines and standards that allow the material as wide an audience as possible
to forge links between researchers within, and outside of, the Ryerson community, who have interests in the normative implications of public policies; to emphasize the variety of different perspectives that may exist with respect to any topic where normative and ethical considerations overlap with public policy questions. Areas of interest of the Ethics Network: Media Ethics, Health Care Ethics, Business Ethics, Intellectual Property Ethics.

CERTIFICATE IN ETHICS
http://www.uwo.ca/philosophy/index.htm

The Department of Philosophy already offers a Certificate in Ethics available for students to take concurrently with their bachelor’s degrees. These programs in Ethics are designed as a response to a wide and growing interest in the ethical dimensions of professional and public life.
The purpose of the program is to enable participants to strengthen and develop their understanding of ethics and, in particular, to enhance their ability to recognize and respond to ethical issues in a wide variety of social and professional settings. The Certificate in Ethics will educate students in the essential concepts, central issues, history, and methodologies of ethical reasoning. The program also emphasizes the development of critical thinking skills, writing skills and verbal skills. Internationally, there exist a number of certificate and diploma programs in ethics. However, the only similar program being offered in Canada at this time is a Certificate in Practical Ethics at York University, taken by students at the same time as their bachelor’s degree. We believe that there is room in Southern Ontario for another Certificate in Ethics program, and that such a program would respond to a demand among Western undergraduates.
