Managing financial crises and market reform: Governments should do the 'right thing'

The Ethics Centre is pleased to present John Pattison, a retired senior executive from the banking industry and author of works on regulation and international policy coordination, who will share his expertise and insights into the complexities of policy-making in the wake of the global financial crisis.

But what is the "right thing"?

Clearly, there are no easy fixes, and the economic impacts of market turmoil are wide, deep and painful. Governments and regulators are faced with tough policy and ethical choices as they try to balance the sometimes conflicting interests of multiple stakeholders. Building additional "safeguards" into financial systems may unintentionally stifle healthy economic growth, and narrowly focused interest groups can work to further complicate government and regulatory policy development. Must there always be winners and losers?
